Some of the league's most talented players are at the shooting guard position. Teams usually look for shooting guards to be a force offensively, but the guys on this list do much more outside of just scoring. Their assists numbers are surprisingly high considering they're also good for nineteen or more points a night and they're a force on the boards as well. In today's game where teams are running more than they have in the past ten years guard play is crucial. That's why it's no surprise that all five of the members of this list are in the thick of the playoff race. Here are HOOPSWORLD'S five hottest shooting guards:

People in San Antonio will say that Manu Ginobili deserves MVP consideration, and while he may not get it that doesn't mean he's not deserving. The Spurs' biggest problem this season has been putting points on the board, so it's not a surprise that once Manu started scoring more they rolled off an eleven-game winning streak and got back atop the Southwest Division. He has single-handedly kept the Spurs in several games this past month. The Spurs will really need him to maintain this level of play even after Brent Barry returns and Tony Parker gets healthy to keep pace in the West.

The Houston Rockets have not lost a game since January 27th. Their season has been turned around, and in a sense so has Tracy's career. Always thought to be a tremendous talent but not a leader, Tracy is quickly proving his doubters wrong. The Rockets haven't skipped a beat since Yao Ming went down with a broken foot, and a lot of that is thanks to Tracy playing the most complete basketball of his life. Should Tracy be able to lead this team into the playoffs and a first round victory his numerous playoff failures would be triumphed by what he accomplished in this season alone.

At first glance Monta would fall under the "doesn't belong here" category, but expect that to change in the following years. Ellis continues to take the league by storm in just his third year. During February Ellis averaged 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists a game. The most impressive statistic though is his 60% shooting from the field. If Monta doesn't re-sign with the Warriors this offseason, he's likely going to get a lot of money from a team that passed him up in the draft. Ellis has made all of his critics believers, and is going to get a huge raise this summer.

For a guy who is supposed to be declining, Iverson sure isn't showing any signs of doing so yet. February was a great month for Iverson as he averaged 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 8.5 assists a game. The Nuggets may end up missing the playoffs due to how incredibly tough the West is, but you cannot fault Iverson. He's been doing it all for the Nuggets, and will have to keep doing so hurt if they are going to get back into the playoff race. X-Rays revealed a small fracture in his right ring finger on Monday, which could really hamper his jump shot. The one thing Iverson has proven throughout his career though is his toughness, so it's no surprise that he'll play through it. Unless that finger falls off he won't be missing any time for the Nuggets; he knows how badly they need him if they're going to make the playoffs.

Player to Watch: Jason Richardson ??Charlotte Bobcats

Jason Richardson is on a tear since March begun. He's gone for over thirty - including forty-two against his former team the Golden State Warriors - three times already this month. The Bobcats are just two games out of the playoffs and they brought Richardson in thinking he could get them to the post season. If he can maintain this level of play we may very well see this franchise's first playoff birth. They are 5-0 this month and Atlanta isn't running away with that 8th spot.

Coldest Shooting Guard: Dwyane Wade ??Miami HEAT

This has been a forgettable season for Wade, and he's going to get an early start at trying to forget it as Pat Riley announced Monday he will be shutting it down this season. Left knee pain has hampered Wade all year and with the playoffs all but out of reach both sides felt this was the best decision to make. He will try rehabbing the knee rather than have surgery and hope to be ready for the Olympics in Beijing come August. Next season will be an important one for Wade. The Heat needed him to carry them this year and he proved that he just was not capable of doing so. He will have a much different team around him come next year, and likely a new coaching staff as well. A big season next year will put him back among the league's best ??somewhere he hasn't ben this season.
